The 18th Triennial Conference of the European Association for Potato Research

The 18th Triennial Conference of the European Association for Potato Research (EAPR2011) will be held in Oulu, Finland, close to one of the five High Grade Seed Potato Production Zones in Europe.

Kylvö

The region is the northernmost area of the world with intensive agricultural production, located just a few hundred kilometers south of the Arctic Circle. Farms are large and specialized in potato, cereal or dairy production.

Oulu is the home town of Nokia and characterized by IT technology. The town has a long history as a regional centre of commerce. It was established at the mouth of one the largest rivers entering the Baltic Sea and was the main port for export of goods from Finland in the 19th century.

Kone

The timing of EAPR2011 will be exceptionally interesting and rewarding in terms of reporting novel data from potato research. In 2009, “omics” research reached the long-awaited milestone and resolved the genome sequence of the potato and also of one of its main enemies, the late blight pathogen (Phytophthora infestans). Entirely novel insights will be available into physiology, development and functions, including host-pathogen interactions.

Potato as food, its nutritional value, promotion of the native potatoes of South America, and many other topics related to the role of potato research in consumer perception and promotion of the use of potatoes will be communicated.

Things to discuss

Top things to discuss at the conference

  1. From genomes to practice: what should be the priorities in utilizing genomic data from the potato and its pests and pathogens?
  2. Where is potato breeding going?
  3. Is there a future for transgenic and cisgenic potatoes in European agriculture?
  4. What can potato research do to increase potato consumption?
  5. What is required from research to make potatoes a true food security crop in the developing world?
  6. What else would you like to add to the topics for major discussions during EAPR2011? Tell us.
